Why Is Mars Red, and Could Humans Ever Live There?
Mars looks red because the dust covering its surface is rich in iron oxide — the same chemistry as rust. Humans cannot live there unprotected: the air is far too thin, temperatures fall well below freezing, and without a global magnetic field the radiation reaching the ground is severe.
Why red?
Martian soil and dust contain a lot of iron. When iron meets oxygen it oxidises and turns reddish-brown — exactly what happens to a nail left out in the rain. Martian winds spread that red dust everywhere, coating the planet and tinting the sky a pale pink.
That is how Mars earned the nickname the Red Planet.

Four barriers to human life
- Unbreathable air — far too thin, with essentially no free oxygen.
- Extreme cold — temperatures across much of the planet stay far below 0 °C.
- Strong radiation — Mars has no global magnetic field to deflect charged particles from the Sun.
- Water locked as ice — there is water ice, but stable liquid water on the surface is very difficult.
So why keep studying Mars?
Because it is the most Earth-like world we can actually reach: a similar day length, seasons, water ice, and landscapes shaped by ancient rivers and lakes. Understanding how Mars lost its atmosphere teaches us about the planet we live on.
NASA rovers are surveying the surface today, collecting rock samples and hunting for traces of ancient life.
