How Does the Big Bang Theory Explain the Birth of the Universe?
The Big Bang theory says that about 13.8 billion years ago the universe began in an extremely hot, dense state and has been expanding ever since. It was not an explosion inside space — space itself stretched, carrying galaxies further and further apart over time.
The most common misunderstanding
The word "bang" makes people picture a bomb going off in empty space. In reality there was no "outside" to explode into.
A better picture: draw a few dots on a deflated balloon, then inflate it. The dots do not run across the surface — the surface itself stretches and pushes them apart. The universe expands like that.

What evidence supports it?
- Galaxies are moving apart — their light is stretched toward longer, redder wavelengths.
- The cosmic microwave background — leftover "warmth" from the early universe, measurable in every direction.
- The mix of light elements — the observed amounts of hydrogen and helium match the theory's predictions.
Looking far away means looking back in time
Light takes time to travel. When a telescope photographs a galaxy billions of light-years away, we are seeing it as it was billions of years ago, not today. That makes telescopes a kind of time machine for studying the young universe.
