At What Age Should Children Start Learning Coding and AI Thinking?
Children can start around ages five to seven with drag-and-drop block coding, practising sequences and loops. From eight to eleven they can build small projects and grasp basic AI ideas. From twelve onward most are ready for a text-based language such as Python.
A rough roadmap by age

Three skills that matter more than syntax
- Breaking problems down — splitting something big into doable steps. Useful far beyond coding.
- Patience with mistakes — code failing is normal. Learning to hunt the bug is learning to program.
- Asking good questions — with AI, knowing what to ask and when to doubt the answer beats knowing commands.
What does "AI thinking" mean for a child?
It does not mean building complex models. At a young age it means understanding three things:
- Machines learn from examples — show enough cat photos and the machine recognises cats; nobody hands it a definition.
- Biased data means biased results — show only white cats and it will struggle with a black one.
- AI can be wrong — a human should always check, especially when it matters.
Advice for parents
- Prefer short and regular — 20 minutes daily beats three hours once a week.
- Let children build what they care about — a game about their own pet keeps them going far longer than a textbook exercise.
- Ask "how did you do that?" instead of "is it right?" — it invites them to explain their thinking.
- You do not need to code yourself — sitting beside them and being curious together is already enough.
